Preventing Tragedies: Moving air, from a fan, is all you need to prevent SIDS?
Thursday, November 27th, 2008Infants who slept in a bedroom with a fan ventilating the air had a dramatically 72 percent lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) compared to infants who slept in a bedroom without a fan, according to a new study published in October 6 issue of Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine. SIDS is the third leading cause of death among infants aged between a week and a year, killing up to 2,500 infants annually in the United States and thousands worldwide.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is caused by mutations in the NEMO/IKK-gamma gene, which is sited on chromosome Xq28. NEMO/IKK-gamma is the rigid subunit of the inhibitor kappa kinase (IKK) complex and is necessary for the activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB (NF-kB). NF-kB is central to many immune, inflammatory, and apoptotic pathways. This condition occurs much more often in females than in males. Incontinentia pigmenti is characterized by skin abnormalities that evolve throughout childhood and young adulthood.
